My practice: methods

Providing insight

All treatments are almost always insightful. We start by mapping out your problem in order to be able to choose a good treatment strategy. According to the ?SSKK model?, we can work on internal Symptom Reduction and/or Strengthening and increase external Support Sources and reduce Stress. Sometimes we continue with in-depth conversations to gain more insight into, for example, how your past still influences you in certain patterns, but often we continue with another treatment method:

CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a widely used treatment method, for which I have a broad theoretical basis both through the clinical psychology training of the RuG and the Gz training afterwards. CBT teaches you to make a clear problem analysis. For example the following parameters are often analyzed:

Event: which situations trigger your problem
Thoughts: what thoughts do you have?
Feeling: How do these events and thoughts make you feel?
Behaviour: What do you do then?
Consequence: What consequences does that behaviour have for the short and long term?

Based on this analysis you learn to change strategies, CBT mainly intervenes in changing thoughts and behaviour.

ACT Positive psychology and mindfulness

ACT is a more recent treatment method, also called third generation CBT, with some important additions and a different mindset. Often you can't change your thoughts very well. Maybe you can formulate helping thoughts, but if you feel bad, those negative thoughts will come anyway. ACT stands for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. You learn to accept negative thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them. And take those thoughts less seriously. Mindfulness (light) techniques help with this. In addition, there is an important positive psychological component: you go in search of what really matters to you in life, your personal values, what makes life worth living for you and learn to act accordingly.

Positive psychology focuses on strengthening, expanding, reactivating or otherwise utilizing what is going well and your own strength. For years this was an underestimated branch of treatment for clinical psychologists. This century this movement fortunately has been strongly on the rise and Psycheheal enjoys working with this method. Because who doesn't want to know what makes you really happy and how to live?

EMDR

One of Psycheheal’s favourite treatment methods is EMDR, because of its often surprisingly fast and favourable results. You can process all kinds of bad experiences with it. It often goes a lot faster with EMDR than just talking. After a good problem analysis, you focus in a very targeted and intense way on what makes that experience so difficult for you to process. Then eye movements are utilized, so that the self-healing capacity of your brain is set in motion. For more information see: www.emdr.nl / www.emdr.com. Many online examples concern the treatment of severe traumas such as war traumas, rape or (natural) disasters, but it often works quickly and well, especially when the trauma is smaller. There are many unpleasant experiences that can lead to fear, stress or depression afterwards. For example, experiencing failure (application, internship, thesis, (driving) exam or blackout at an exam), a difficult birth, an accident, a loss. Specific phobias for example, fear of the dentist, heights or animals can also be treated in this way.

I, someone with a slight aversion for psychologists, suffered a lot from my sister's mental health issues . I was very worried, had bad dreams and my schoolwork suffered and eventually halted completed. After an intake Marjan advised me to do EMDR to give the bad dreams a place. Slightly skeptically I started. During such a session you revisit that bad dream and treat it by following a light and thereby reducing the bad feeling. My thoughts went in all directions: from my family to a piece of music and back to the dream. After a session you are exhausted but the bad feeling accompanying the images is gone. I am very happy that I did this and learned a lot during those sessions. This way I can now deal with it better and I give myself time to process difficult things. Marjan was a nice psychologist who really took away my doubts and prejudices about psychologists, thank you!

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is making a comeback and justifiably so. This method can be very effective in a mindful and grounded way. You, the client is always in control, nothing happens against your will and sessions can always be recorded, so you know exactly what is happening. Moreover, you can practice it at home.  Treatment goals can be: learning to relax, strengthening self-confidence, finding sources of strength, trauma processing, overcoming perfectionism, searching for the origin of problem behaviour and/or correcting it. This completely different way of working, which deals with subconscious experiential processes more than conscious rational processes, is a method Psycheheal likes to use.  https://www.uitzendinggemist.net/aflevering/436617/2doc.html# or http://nvvh.com/informatie-hypnose/credential

Last year I went through a short treatment program with Marjan to work on my perfectionism, since it caused mental and physical overload. I always had to get the best out of myself, felt I had to prove myself to others and felt I wouldn't pass an exam if I didn't study that one hour extra. After I had explained the issues to Marjan, she came up with the idea to treat me by means of (self)hypnosis. The first hypnosis session was very nice and brought (temporary) relaxation in my body. In the following sessions we went to look at the cause of the problem. Those sessions were quite intensive, but the effect was noticeable fairly quickly. I more easily tell myself something is good enough and I don't get guilty anymore when I can't study for a day because I have planned something nice. Marjan was very quiet during the sessions, created a safe feeling and if it didn't work immediately she gave enough time and suggested other possibilities or gave tips to make it work anyway. I found hypnosis a great way to get my perfectionism under control.

As many other international students that need to leave their home country, families and friends, moving and studying abroad can be a stressful experience, even after years. The excitement of the cultural shock slowly fades away and the expats find themselves under a lot of pressure to integrate, to speak the language, to socialize and to forge contacts. This can be stressful and sometimes overwhelming. Marjan identified the root(s) of my stress and proposed a new sort of therapy for me that I had never heard of before: hypnosis therapy. All I knew about hypnosis were the Hollywood movies in which people are being put to sleep and made to do weird stuff. Obviously, it was not about that. Marjan helped me to immerse myself into hypnotherapy and explained the steps along the way. Looking back, I found it a wonderful and meaningful experience to get to know my (inner) self better. It is a sort of  combination between introspection and mindfulness. It helps you relax a great deal, and that is what I needed most. Also, it helps you navigate to the roots of your anxiety/problems, and constructively helps you find them and deal with them. I would totally recommend!

Outside psychology

The healing power which is known for so long, is now more and more scientifically proved and addopted by Psychologist too. In 2022 Marjan was inspired by the teachings of the Buitenpsychologen and now knows how to use this in therapy. From the new Stadpark location sessions can be partly or fully done outside.
